Citizenship by descent is often sold as the easy route to a second passport. Sometimes it is straightforward. Sometimes a family has to reconstruct a century of births, marriages, deaths and naturalisations across several countries, while explaining why names or dates do not quite match. The government fee may be modest, but the evidence work can be demanding.
How we ranked the providers
We reviewed public service information on 8 September 2026. Rather than counting how many countries appeared in a menu, we looked at what help a family could actually receive: an early eligibility view, archive research, corrections, translations, certification, filing support and access to qualified legal advice when the facts become difficult.
Breadth is not always better. A specialist may outperform a global firm on a difficult Polish archive search or a British nationality provision. Use this ranking to identify firms to interview, then choose on the written analysis of your exact family line.

1. Henley & Partners: best overall for multi-country cases
Henley & Partners ranks first. Its dedicated service publicly covers Austria, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania and other possible routes. It describes help with ancestry assessment, proving lineage, document preparation and application management, including genealogist support at additional cost where needed.
Henley is a sensible starting point for families with several plausible citizenship lines or a wider global-mobility plan.
2. CitizenX: best remote-first platform
CitizenX ranks second. It publishes a consistent online comparison of multiple descent programs and combines digital onboarding, document collection and concierge support. Its listed markets include Canada, Croatia, Czechia, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Poland.
CitizenX is likely to appeal to UAE-based families who need to coordinate records and advisers across several time zones.
3. Latitude: best for comparing route types
Latitude offers descent services for several European and Canadian routes alongside investment and residence programs.
Best for: families who should compare ancestry against residence or investment rather than assume one route is automatically superior.
4. Sable International: best for British nationality
Sable International is especially relevant to British citizenship and nationality claims through parents, grandparents and historic connections. Its UK office states that it is authorised by the Immigration Advice Authority.
Best for: UK-focused claims where dates, territories, gender, marital status and historic nationality law affect transmission.
5. Polaron European Citizenship: best for Central European records
Polaron European Citizenship focuses on European ancestry cases and describes research, translation and application management through an international network.
Best for: Polish, German, Czech, Slovak and related cases where multilingual archives drive the project.
6. Italian Citizenship Assistance: best for end-to-end Italian files
Italian Citizenship Assistance publishes a full-service Italian jure sanguinis scope covering genealogy, record retrieval, legalisation, translation, forms and consular coordination.
Best for: applicants with a viable Italian line who need specialist record and application management.
Document planning from the UAE
Start with a family tree that records full names, alternative spellings, dates and places of birth, marriage, divorce, death and naturalisation. Then identify the authority that holds each record and the format the destination country accepts.
Documents issued in the UAE may need authentication and certified translation. Foreign records may need an apostille, consular legalisation or no further authentication depending on the countries and treaty framework. Never order expensive document packs before the provider confirms the legal line and the required format.
When a family also needs stable UAE status, keep the ancestry project separate from residency permit and family sponsorship deadlines. A pending foreign citizenship case does not extend a UAE visa.
Current law matters as much as old records. Italy's foreign ministry states that legislation adopted in 2025 added new conditions and exceptions for people born abroad who already hold another citizenship. A blog written before those changes may describe eligibility that no longer exists.
What a complete quote should cover
Ask for a written scope that separates:
- preliminary legal eligibility;
- genealogy and archive searches;
- civil-record orders and certified copies;
- naturalisation and military records;
- name or date corrections;
- apostilles, legalisation and certified translations;
- consular, administrative or court filing;
- government and professional fees;
- passport application after recognition; and
- return and storage of originals.
If a case may require litigation, confirm who the lawyer is, where that person is licensed and what the court stage costs. A genealogy company can locate records; that does not automatically qualify it to give a contested nationality-law opinion.
Ask for the eligibility conclusion in writing before authorising the full document search. A useful memo names the qualifying ancestor, maps every generation, addresses naturalisation or nationality loss and separates confirmed facts from records that are still missing. This makes competing proposals easier to compare and reduces the risk of paying for apostilles or translations before the underlying legal route is clear.

Red flags
Be wary of anyone who promises citizenship after seeing only a surname or DNA result. A serious adviser should be able to name the relevant ancestor, explain the law, flag any naturalisation that may have broken the chain and identify the authority that will decide the case. Never send irreplaceable originals without a receipt and a clear return process.
Also challenge fixed timelines. Archive searches, record amendments, court calendars and consular appointments are controlled by third parties. A provider can manage a project efficiently but cannot guarantee those institutions will move on schedule.
